April Wrap-Up: Witches and Earth Day

May 6, 2019

Phil Stephens joined us for the second in his series of two lectures on magical thinking and witchcraft in anthropology. Both talks were well-attended, and drew lively Q&A discussions with the audience.

As usual, members met up at coffee shops throughout the month of April for Cafe Inquiry discussion events at various locations. (Cafe Inquiry city was rescheduled for April 29 from April 22 due to Dyngus Day.) Drinking Skeptically was held on the second Friday in April, where the topic of discussion was “the true believers” – as usual, Dave Hahn created some lighthearted pamphlets to prompt the discussion, referencing Johnathan Kay’s book Among the Truthers (2011). By understanding our cultural opponents, we can better engage in fruitful discussion about conspiracy theories of which we are skeptical.

CFI’s Potluck Dinner Party took place on the second Wednesday in April, and Secular Sunday brought up the end of the month, where we discussed the ever-relevant topic of marijuana legalization. On April 27, CFI members took an impromptu trip to the movies to see the new Apollo 11 documentary screened at the Dipson McKinley theatre.

Finally, CFI members joined employees of CFI in Amherst for an Earth Day celebration on April 22. We cleaned up garbage around the building premises and planted two flowering peach trees.
