Test of Faith
(an independent video production by Ken Rowe and CFI’s own Tom Flynn)
In a violent post-civilized world, two friends try to live by their wits instead of brute force. Carl Parker and Allen Spencer invent their own religion, masquerade as a traveling guru and his all-purpose acolyte, and proselytize for food and shelter. Falling in with a band of mercenaries, they realize the potential power of their deceit and question their motives. Is their scam spinning out of control? Can they use “belief” to restore order, or is it the means to seize power?
This 46-minute production was produced by Free Inquiry editor Tom Flynn and directed by independent filmmaker Ken Rowe. The story came from Tom’s stage play New Moon in the Sky, later adapted for his novel Galactic Rapture (2000) and adapted for an off-off-off-off-Broadway production as Messiah Game in 2002. This production has a deep history: it was actually filmed on locations in Niagara County and downtown Buffalo in 1983, but not edited for final release until last year.
Don’t miss the apocalyptic epic that’s been a “guilty secret” for 35 years!
Test of Faith is being screended as part of a section of “Local Shorts” made by Buffalo filmmakers. It is 36 minutes long. The full program for the Buffalo Dreams Fantastic Film Festival can be found here.
